Grand Canyon women's soccer senior midfielder
McKenzie Cook was selected as one of 30 candidates for the Senior CLASS Award on Wednesday.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS award, which stands for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Cook will graduate with her MBA in December. In just two and a half years, she graduated with her bachelor's degree in marketing and minor in biblical studies while maintaining over a 3.5 GPA. After graduation, she plans to pursue a job in the business field using her marketing degree or helping in a sales department.
Cook joins an impressive list of nominees with players from powerhouse programs such as Stanford, Texas and North Carolina.
Last season, Cook led the Lopes in points and goals, while starting every game the past two seasons. She was named first-team All-WAC in 2017 as well as being named to the conference all-tournament team. So far in 2018, Cook has tallied a team-high four goals and added one assist to give her a team-high nine points. Those four goals came in the past two home games, when the senior scored two goals against both Portland State and Cal State Fullerton.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans who will select a winner. The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2018 NCAA Men's and Women's College Cup championships in December.
