ARLINGTON, Texas – The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team dropped its final match of the Maverick Invitational on Saturday. Sam Houston State defeated GCU 25-22, 26-24, 25-13 at College Park Center.
GCU was led by
Kayla Matthews with 16 kills, four digs and three blocks.
Kaira Moss added three kills and four blocks.
Molly Feldmeth led the Lopes with 19 assists and
Teagan DeFalco had a team-high 10 digs.
The Bearkats outhit GCU .291 to .127.
In the first set, Matthews recorded her fourth kill for an 18-18 tie . Sam Houston State reached 20 points first after an ace and led 20-19. The Bearkats finished the set hitting at a .405 clip and won 25-22.
GCU took the first time out of the second set and trailed 14-11. GCU tied the set at 22-22 after an Adams ace. GCU trailed 24-22 but a pair of Matthews kills pulled the Lopes even. Sam Houston State scored the final points to win 26-24.
The Bearkats scored eight of the first 10 points of the third set and never let the Lopes find rhythm to win 25-13.
GCU is back in action on Thursday, when it hosts Kansas City in the WAC opener for both squads.
