ARLINGTON, Texas – The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team won its fifth consecutive tournament opener by sweeping Bradley 25-16, 25-19, 25-19 on Friday morning at the Maverick Invitational.
The Lopes improved to 7-3 this season and outhit the Bruins .253 to .129.
GCU was led by the serving of freshman
K.J. Adams, who finished with a career-high seven aces to go along with 11 digs and four kills.
Kaira Moss had eight kills and two blocks while
Annabelle Kubinski added seven kills with a .778 hitting efficiency.
Melody Horton added seven kills and five digs while
Meme Fletcher saw her first action of the season with three kills.
Molly Feldmeth led the Lopes with 23 assists.
GCU took its first lead of the first set at 9-8 after a Belmont attack error. A 4-0 run forced the Bruins to take a timeout trailing 11-8. A block by Kubinski and
Maria Adams pushed the GCU lead to 18-12. GCU cruised to the 25-16 win. The Lopes forced the Bruins into nine errors in the opening set.
In the second set, a 6-0 run resulted in an 18-14 GCU advantage. Adams served a pair of aces during the run. GCU recorded five aces in the set and won 25-19.
Adams gave the Lopes an early lift with three aces in the third set. GCU led 12-6 after an Adams kill. The Lopes had their most efficient set, hitting at a .281 clip. GCU won the set 25-19.
GCU is back in action at 4:30 p.m. when it takes on Maverick Invitational host Texas-Arlington.
