The Grand Canyon women's soccer team picked up its first win of the season in front of a packed GCU Stadium.
The Lopes (1-2) scored the game-winning goal on the counter attack. After GCU goalkeeperÂ
Abby Burton saved a shot,
Fiona Samodurov found Lopes teammate
McKenzie Cook racing down the left side of the pitch. Cook delivered a pinpoint pass to
Jaycee Iranshad, who deflected the ball with her left foot for the difference in a 1-0 Lopes win over Houston Baptist (1-1).
"Obviously nice to get the result in front of a great home crowd," GCU head coach
Derek Leader said. "But I wasn't happy with the soccer that we put out there today. We are a better team than we showed. A win is a win, but I know from last weekend that we can play better soccer and we need to bring that to Sunday's game against NAU (Northern Arizona). But I am very encouraged by the play of our bench. Several players were able to come in and make an impact."
The Lopes came out aggressive on the offensive end in the first half. GCU tallied 10 shots in the first 21 minutes of play and finished the half with 16 shots, which was more than the Lopes had in their first two matches combined. The second half was more of the same with the Lopes tallying nine more shots, finishing with 25 shots and six on goal for the match.
Iranshad led the offensive attack with seven shots, while Cook added five and her first assist of the season. Samodurov, a defender, was also credited with an assist on Iranshad's goal in the 66th minute.
With much of the match being played on GCU's offensive side of the field, reigning WAC Defensive Player of the Week
Abby Burton didn't face many shots. Houston Baptist totaled five shots with two on goal. In the first three matches of the season, Burton has faced 54 shots with a save percentage of 89.0.
The Lopes return to GCU Stadium on Sunday when they face NAU (1-1) under the lights at 7 p.m. The Lumberjacks will face New Mexico State in Flagstaff on Friday night before traveling to Phoenix.
Admission to all GCU women's soccer games is free.
