PULLMAN, Wash. – In its second overtime battle on the road in as many games, the Grand Canyon women's soccer team held strong through 90 minutes but was defeated 1-0 in overtime by No. 21 Washington State on Sunday.
In a largely defensive effort for the Lopes (0-2), GCU's back line remained strong through 14 WSU corner kicks and 90 minutes of scoreless regulation. The Cougars (2-0) boast a pair of U.S. Under-23 National Team players and a stacked Pac-12 roster.
"I'm proud of the way we played," Lopes head coach
Derek Leader said. "Washington State is an extremely tough squad. They're well-coached and well-organized and we took our second game (of the weekend) into overtime.
"Two opponents, two overtimes. I'm extremely encouraged in what we saw. We played two top teams in the region, and today's match was against a nationally ranked team with two U-23 national team players. It shows how far we've come since last year. I'm encouraged and looking forward to us turning this around for the rest of the season."
Senior
McKenzie Cook took the Lopes' only two shots of the game, while senior goalkeeper
Abby Burton recorded seven saves.
Washington State outshot the Lopes 9-0 in the first half, but Burton made three saves to hold the 0-0 score at halftime.
Cook's pair of shots came in the second half, while Burton tallied four saves to hold the game scoreless and force the overtime period.
In the 92nd minute, the Cougars capitalized on a cross ball to claim the overtime match.
The Lopes return to Phoenix to open the home slate on Aug. 24. GCU welcomes Houston Baptist at 4 p.m. while the men's soccer team hosts No. 12 Wisconsin to follow at 7 p.m.
