SPOKANE, Wash. – Senior goalkeeper
Abby Burton tied a Division I record for the Grand Canyon women's soccer team with 15 saves, including a game-extending penalty kick block, but the Lopes fell 2-1 in double overtime to Gonzaga on Friday night at Luger Field.
"It was a tough loss but a great experience for our team," GCU head coach
Derek Leader said of the regular-season opener. "We had a lot of fresh faces out there that had their first real collegiate experience and many of them played extremely well.
"Our team was able to fight back after
Dani Babb went down with an injury and we got a go-ahead goal from
Camryn Larson. We just couldn't hang on in the end. I'm thrilled with the play of the entire team. Gonzaga is extremely good and ultimately we should be proud of the way we played."
Larson, a sophomore forward, put the Lopes on top just more than 10 minutes into the second half, as she netted her first career goal off a breakaway in the 59th minute.
Senior
McKenzie Cook led GCU (0-1) in the attack with four shots, including two on goal, while sophomore
Hannah Edwards had the only other Lopes shot on goal.
The group of Babb,
Hannah Nichols,
Andrea Martinez,
Kelsey Smith,
Jaycee Iranshad,
Perri Belzer and
Remmi Deutsch each registered a shot to add to the GCU offense.
The Zags (1-0) tied the game in the 82nd minute with a long shot from 40 yards out, but the pair battled it out through the 90-minute regulation time to force overtime.
The Lopes and the Zags headed to overtime with Gonzaga leading in shots, 23-12. Burton tallied 13 saves in regulation, while Cook had three shots to lead GCU's offensive effort.
Burton kept the Lopes alive by blocking a penalty kick in the 96th minute to hold the 1-1 tie in sudden death, but Gonzaga netted the game-winner with a header in the 102nd minute to win the game in double overtime.
GCU returns to the pitch on Sunday at No. 21 Washington State. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
