Grand Canyon takes to the road for a three-game Western Athletic Conference series at CSU Bakersfield beginning on Friday night. GCU leads the all-time series between the two schools 10-2 including a string of eight straight wins.
All three games are available on the WAC Digital Network.
Â
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- COTTON ROLLS A FIVE: Sophomore outfielder Quin Cotton had a weekend to remember against New Mexico State, going 9-for-13 (.692) with seven extra-base hits. In the opener, he was a single shy of the cycle. On Sunday, he went 5-for-5 with three doubles and a home run. Not only is Cotton the only GCU player to go a perfect 5-for-5 since the program's return to Division I in 2014, he's now done it twice in a one month span.
Â
- SUNDAY SUCCESS WITH EVANKO: The Lopes have faced three consecutive rubber games on Sunday, but that has proved to be no problem with Ethan Evanko on the mound. The redshirt senior is 3-0 with a 1.57 ERA over his last four starts, striking out 29 in 23.0 innings.
Â
- SCORE THREE, HOLD TO TWO: The Lopes are 24-10 when scoring three or more runs and 13-1 when limiting the opponent to two or less runs.

SCOUTING
In WAC play, CSU Bakersfield won a series at Utah Valley via the sweep. The Roadrunners have lost series to UTRGV, New Mexico State, Sacramento State and Seattle U. The 'Runners rank sixth in batting average (.255), seventh in ERA (5.65) and last in fielding percentage (.952) among WAC teams.
CSUB has had its fair share of success in mid-week games. The 'Runners have defeated a pair of top-25 squads in mid-week action including Saint Mary's and UNLV. CSU Bakersfield has won the Friday night matchup in its last three WAC series including wins against Seattle U and Sacramento State in the last two weekends.
Last week, CSU Bakersfield fell in mid-week action at home to UC Santa Barbara, coughing up an early 4-1 lead. At Seattle U last weekend, the 'Runners scored four late runs to top Seattle U 7-5 in the series opener. CSUB lost Games 2 and 3 by scores of 8-6 and 10-4.
Andrew Penner ranks in the WAC's top five in hits per game (1.37). He is ranked as the 31st-toughest batter to strike out nationally, doing so just once every 12.2 plate appearances.
Last year, GCU swept a three-game series against the Roadrunners in Phoenix. In the conference opener,
Tom Lerouge drove in all three runs as the Lopes scored an eighth-inning go-ahead run to top CSUB 3-2. The Lopes used four inning-ending double plays to hold CSUB to four runs in a 7-4 win in Game 2. GCU completed the sweep with a 14-hit outburst in the finale, winning 8-3 in
Jack Schneider's first collegiate weekend victory.
Â
LAST TIME OUT
- The Lopes took two of three games from New Mexico State to remain in first place in the WAC.
- Grand Canyon and NMSU traded run-rule victories in the first two games. The Lopes doubled up the Aggies 8-4 in the rubber match series finale thanks to Cotton's five-hit game and Evanko's six innings of two-run baseball.
Â
WHAT'S NEXT
- The Lopes play the back end of a home-and-home series with Arizona, traveling to Tucson on Tuesday for a mid-week matchup.
- Grand Canyon wraps up the home slate with three games against second-place Sacramento State next weekend.
