Lopes' early 2-0 lead erased by seven unanswered runs
Grand Canyon dropped its series opener to Sacramento State, 9-5, on Friday night at Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark.
The Lopes (27-22, 14-5 WAC) put up single-run tallies in the first two frames to jump out to an early 2-0 lead over the Hornets (28-20, 14-5 WAC).
Quin Cotton led off the first with a double, allowing a groundball up the middle by Ian Evans to bring him home.
In the second, Preston Pavlica belted an opposite field home run to right field, putting GCU up 2-0.
The Hornets responded by scoring seven unanswered runs including a four-run fifth inning to erase GCU's early-game damage.
GCU showed signs of a comeback by scoring two runs in the sixth to make it a 7-4 game. Pavlica came through with his second extra-base hit of the night -- a double to left-center to plate a run. Austin Bull drove in the second run of the frame on a groundout to the right side of the infield.
Sacramento State restored order with a run in the seventh and a run in the eighth to reclaim a five-run lead.
The Lopes got a run back in the eighth as Evans came around to score after leading off the frame with a single.
Sacramento State was fueled by 15 hits including three home runs.
The Lopes will look to even the series when the two teams meet up again on Saturday night. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
