The libero was honored as last MPSF Defensive Player of the Week in 2018
PHOENIX – Grand Canyon's Sky Engleman was named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Defensive Player of the Week following the final week of the year. This is Engleman's first time earning the honor and the third week GCU has been honored.
Engleman made the most of not only the last week of the 2018 season but the last time he will play in Antelope Gym. The libero, as head coach Matt Werle put it, "played the way he is capable of playing" in his final home match. The week started with Engleman being honored with eight of his teammates on senior night against Benedictine-Mesa and was capped with a 3-1 victory over MPSF foe, USC.
Against Benedictine-Mesa, the Libero recorded three digs and three assists in the straight-set win but his impact performance of the week came against USC. With playoff seeding on the line, Engleman recorded 19 digs, a team-high this season, failed to record a reception error and held the USC offense to a sub .300 percentage. The 19 digs were two shy of Engleman's career best and his 10th double-digit dig performance of the year.
The effort helped the Lopes secure the No. 5 seed in the MPSF Tournament. GCU will travel to Irvine, Calif. this week to face the No. 4 seed Concordia Eagles in the quarterfinals. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. (MST).
