Lopes fall in three sets to the Waves
MALIBU, Calif.- Grand Canyon men's volleyball was unable to top No. 7 Pepperdine in the second leg of their California road trip on Saturday. The Lopes battled through three sets against the Waves, falling in each 25-18, 25-19 and 25-20. The loss tied the Lopes and Waves at 1-1 on the season.
The Lopes tallied 28 kills in the match, with Ashton King leading the team with six. Zachary Melcher came through with a total of 16 of the team's 25 assists. King and Melcher also led the team in blocks with King recording four throughout the night and Melcher tallying three.
Despite a late push in the first set, the Lopes fell 25-18 to the Waves. Pepperdine came out front to start the match, leading the Lopes 16-9 going into the second timeout of the set. Grand Canyon used the opportunity to make adjustments, getting two kills from Trevor Weary and Will Schwob to cut the lead to five. The Lopes kept the momentum going, bringing the score as close as 20-16, before the Waves pushed through for the 25-18 win.
Grand Canyon came out strong in set two, starting the set with an 11-7 lead over the Waves. Pepperdine fought back to tie at 11 before taking the lead. The Waves came through to finish the set 25-19 over the Lopes.
The Lopes finished with their best set of the night, finishing only five points behind the Waves. Grand Canyon was able to take the lead early in the match with kills by King and Cody Williams to put them up 8-6 before the Waves came back and took the match, 25-20.
Looking Ahead
Grand Canyon will return home on Friday to take on the Concordia Eagles in Phoenix. The match will take place at 6 p.m. in Antelope Gymnasium.
