CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – In what was the best fight from the Grand Canyon softball team over the five-game weekend, the Lopes (3-8) fell one run short to No. 5 UCLA, 7-6, on Monday afternoon at Big League Dreams Field in Cathedral City, California.
The Bruins advance to an undefeated 10-0 on the season.
GCU got on the board first in the top of the first frame, as senior
Laynee Gomez nailed an RBI single with the bases loaded to put the Lopes ahead, 1-0.
Gomez was 1-4 on the game with one RBI.
UCLA came back with momentum to hit a 2 RBI double and an RBI single to go ahead, 3-1, at the end of the first inning.
In the top of the second frame,
Loriann Olson hit a bases-clearing triple to bring home
Madelyn Dowdle,
Taylor Kaye and
Shea Smith. Olson stole home off a wild pitch to put GCU ahead, 5-3, in the top of the second inning.
Olson was 1-3 with three RBI and a walk, while
Shea Smith led the Lopes going 2-4 from home plate with two runs.
UCLA matched the Lopes with four runs of their own in the bottom of the second to lead, 7-5.
In the final scoring play of the game in the top of the fifth, sophomore
Jordon Keeton hit a SAC fly to left center field to bring Gomez home and pinch runner
Katelyn Acton to third to cut UCLA's lead to one.
GCU was unable to tie it up and the game was ended after the top half of the seventh.
The Lopes return home to host Houston Baptist and Niagara in the GCU Purple Classic beginning Friday, Feb. 23.
