CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Grand Canyon fell to the pair of Stanford and Arkansas on Saturday afternoon to start the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, as the Lopes fell to 3-5 on the season.
"The first game was disappointing because I felt like we're much better than what we showed," head coach
Ann Pierson said. "We know we're facing a Pac-12 opponent and we got their No. 1 pitcher, which is what the kids are earning by being a great team. At the same time, we have to get in there and be better at the plate than we were.
"We made some good adjustments in the next game against a very tough Arkansas team," Pierson said. "The bright spot was
Kaileigh Holland getting her first collegiate hit. Watching
Alexa Coons learn from last weekend's outings and working on being tighter in the zone… she had much more command over her pitches. Her presence on the mound was good and we were a couple swings away from tying the game or going ahead.
"Game two had much better energy and a solid defense," Pierson said. "We have to keep grinding tomorrow against two tough opponents. We need these two first tough weekends to grow as a team."
GAME ONE
The Lopes fell behind right off the bat, as Stanford put two runs on the board in the first inning and one run apiece in the second, sixth and seventh frames. Senior
Niki Gonzalez and junior
Taylor Kaye had a hit and a walk apiece, but the Lopes were unable to get anything going offensively in game one.
Sophomore pitcher Briana Aguilar-Beaucage (1-2) dished out a pair of strikeouts to the Cardinal as well.
GAME TWO
The Razorbacks used a 2 RBI homer in the second inning to get on the board and lead GCU, 2-0. Arkansas would put five total runs on the board before a 2 RBI single to right field from junior
Sierra Smith brought senior
Laynee Gomez and sophomore
Loriann Olson home to prevent the shutout.
Freshman
Kaileigh Holland checked in to pinch hit and registered her first collegiate hit for the Lopes. Olson, Gomez and
Sierra Smith each had a hit as well.
The Lopes return for day two of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic tomorrow, as GCU faces UC Riverside at Noon (PT) and Syracuse at 2:30 p.m.
