Grand Canyon held an employee party that started early Saturday outside GCU Arena but the Lopes' basketball party inside GCU Arena got off to a late start.
The Lopes (7-5) used a 15-0 run and a defensive stretch of holding Mississippi Valley State without a field goal for nearly 10 minutes to take command. With sophomore Alessandro Lever scoring a team season-high 26 points, GCU won 85-64 to extend its regular season home winning streak to 12 games.
The Delta Devils made one last push on the Lopes early in the second half, cutting the lead to 43-34 with 16:35 remaining in the game. But with Lever scoring 15 of GCU's first 20 points of the second half, the Lopes began the blowout. GCU went on an 11-0 run for a 54-34 lead Lever made 10 of 17 shots and grabbed five minutes in 26 minutes for his second 20-point game of the season.
GCU junior guard Carlos Johnson added 16 points, scoring half of his points on free throws, while junior swingman Oscar Frayer also scored 16 points. The Lopes outscored the Delta Devils 42-20 in the paint and shot 57 percent from the field in the second half.
The Lopes emerged sluggishly and trailed 16-7 before a lineup of sophomore point guard Damari Milstead and reserves scored 15 unanswered points. The GCU defense, which held Northern Iowa without a field goal for nearly seven minutes Wednesday, kept Mississippi Valley State from making one for almost 10 minutes of the first half Saturday.
The Lopes stretched the first-half lead to as much as 13 points before the Delta Devils closed the gap to 34-27 at halftime.
GCU takes a Christmas hiatus before returning to action next Saturday at San Diego, which is 7-0 at home this season and 9-3 overall.
