SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Grand Canyon senior center
ShaRon Miller recorded her sixth double-digit scoring game of the season in Thursday's loss at Santa Clara.
The Blaine, Minn., native scored 12 points in the Lopes' 75-55 loss to the Broncos. Despite strong games from multiple GCU players, Santa Clara (7-4) won GCU's final non-conference game.
Two more Lopes scored in double digits, with senior
AJ Cephas recording 11 points and eight rebounds while freshman
Carla Balague added 10 points. Freshman point guard
Laura Piera also helped contribute, recording nine assists with four points.
Cephas came out strong in the first quarter, scoring the Lopes' first four points of the game. The teams battled back and forth, with four lead changes in the first quarter alone. Santa Clara hit its stride with two minutes left to go in the first quarter with a nine-point run that put the Broncos ahead 21-12 to finish the quarter.
GCU held the Broncos to a nine-point lead after the second quarter. Balague hit three consecutive shots to lead the Lopes at halftime with eight points.
Early in the third quarter, a jumper from freshman guard
Venla Varis brought the Lopes within seven points for the first time since the first quarter. The Broncos finished the third quarter on a 6-0 run to lead GCU 59-43 going into the final quarter.
Miller recorded five points in the fourth quarter to cut the Broncos lead to 11, but the Lopes were unable to rally more and Santa Clara moved to 5-1 at home. Milller has scored in double digits in six of the past eight games and is averaging 10.5 points per game, which is a six-point increase from last season.
The Lopes open WAC play on Jan. 3, when they take on Utah Valley in Orem, Utah, at 6 p.m.
