OREM, Utah – The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team rallied late but came up short, falling at Utah Valley 25-17, 25-19, 25-27, 25-21 on Saturday.
The loss ends the Lopes season at 11-17 (4-12 WAC).
Redshirt freshman
Kaira Moss led the Lopes with a match-high 15 kills. Freshman
Annabelle Kubinski finished with 10 kills while junior
Melody Horton added nine kills and nine digs. Junior
Kayla Redfield led GCU with 43 assists and sophomore
Teagan DeFalco had 22 digs. Senior
Tressa Schuler served up four of GCU's six aces, including a big ace in the third-set win.
UVU was led by Kazna Tarawhiti with 13 kills and Bailey Nixon with 12 kills. The Wolverines outhit the Lopes .238 to .100.
GCU finishes the year in a tie for sixth place in the WAC standings, just missing out on a WAC Tournament berth. GCU and Seattle U tied for sixth but the Redhawks advance to the conference tournament due to winning both regular season matches with the Lopes.
Utah Valley scored nine of the first 11 points of the opening set, aided by three blocks and led 9-2. The Lopes committed nine errors in the set as the Wolverines won 25-17.
The second set began like the first with Utah Valley taking an 8-2 lead. Down by seven, GCU got kills from sophomore
Sarah Hagge and freshman
Esmee Priem and pulled within 15-13. UVU quickly responded with three straight points and opened a five-point advantage. The Wolverines held off the Lopes for the 25-19 win.
GCU took its first lead of the match in the third set after a Moss kill and UVU error at 6-5. The Lopes led until UVU retook the lead at 12-11. GCU led 19-18 after a kill by Horton. UVU went on a small run to lead 22-20, but GCU responded with a Horton kill and service ace by Redfield. GCU served for set point after an ace by Horton. On its third try at set point, Schuler served an ace and landed the Lopes a 27-25 win.
The Lopes used an early 5-0 service run by Schuler to lead 7-6. UVU regained the lead 13-10 after a service ace. GCU tied the set at 14-14 after kills by Kubinski and freshman
K.J. Adams. The Wolverines scored the next three points and held off the Lopes 25-21.
