GCU finishes 2-game stop in North Carolina
Following a setback at East Carolina on Wednesday night, the Lopes travel across North Carolina to play at UNC Wilmington in a nonconference matchup Saturday.
GCU (1-1) and the Seahawks (2-1) tip off at 11 a.m. (Phoenix time).Â
In its season-opening 74-63 win over Incarnate Word, GCU was led by the preseason All-WAC pair of senior power forward AJ Cephas and freshman point guard Laura Piera. Cephas tallied a career-high 21 points and Piera dished out 14 assists in her collegiate debut. The Lopes began this trip with a 59-47 loss at East Carolina, where GCU freshman guard Venla Varis scored a team-high 17 points.

The Seahawks are 2-1 on the year with victories over Belmont Abbey and Presbyterian and a loss to Ohio. A member of the Colonial Athletic Association, the Seahawks were 12-19 last season with a 4-14 conference record. UNC Wilmington downed Towson 58-47 in the first round of the CAA Tournament, but fell to Drexel to end the 2017-18 campaign.Â
UNC Wilmington is led offensively by GiGi Smith and Shrita Parker with 17.0 and 15.7 points per game, respectively. Paige Powell leads the Seahawks on the glass with 9.7 rebounds per game, while Parker has 14 assists through three games.Â
