DeWayne Russell arrived in France earlier this month as a point guard injury replacement coming off the bench for his new professional club.
That did not last long. After one exhibition game and five days of his pro basketball life, Russell moved into the starting lineup for French club SLUC Nancy and will be there when the team officially starts its season tonight.
Russell, the Lopes' leading scorer and playmaker last season, quickly has fit in for SLUC Nancy in northeastern France. Signed to replace an injured point guard, Russell joined the club amid its preseason and made an immediate splash with an 18-point debut. Russell moved into the starting lineup for the next two "friendlies" and finished the preseason with a 17.7 scoring average in 29.0 minutes per game. He shot 60 percent from the field with five-of-eight 3-point shooting.
Tonight, Russell will make his official pro debut when SLUC Nancy plays host to Etuile de Charleville-Maizeires in the Disneyland Paris LeadersCup, a tournament among Ligue Nationale de Basket clubs to start the season.
Playing at the 6,027-seat Palais des Sports de Gentilly, SLUC Nancy also starts three other former American collegiate standouts -- Wright State's DaShaun Wood, UC-Davis' Brynton Lamar and Murray State's Ivan Aska. But on SLUC Nancy's
Twitter account, the announcement of Russell's arrival is the pinned tweet.
UPDATE: Russell posted 17 points, eight rebounds and eight assists in his debut Tuesday to help SLUC Nancy win 73-58.
