CHICAGO – The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team fell to Chicago State 25-22, 17-25, 27-25, 25-21 on Saturday afternoon on the CSU campus.
The Lopes got a big match from Tegan DeFalco with 15 kills and 13 digs, but the Cougars pulled out the win.
Hannah Hicks finished with eight kills and five blocks, while
Claire Kovensky added nine kills and five digs.
Emma Ahern added 15 digs and
Tressa Schuler finished with seven kills and 14 digs.
Trailing early in the first set, the Lopes scored four straight points to take their first lead at 7-6 after a Kovensky ace. CSU took a 15-12 advantage forcing the Lopes to call the first timeout of the match. The Cougars would extend the run to eight straight points and lead 21-12 before a furious GCU rally pulled the Lopes within 24-22 after a DeFalco kill. CSU would get the final point to win the set 25-22.
In the second set, the Lopes took their first three point lead after a
Sarah Hagge kill to lead 9-6. GCU would lead 13-9 after a pair of DeFalco kills. GCU would up the lead to 16-10 after a Hicks block. GCU would lead by as many as 10 points and Hicks would close it out with a kill at 25-17.
CSU scored the first five points of the third set to take the lead. GCU responded quickly to tie the set up at 7-7 after a
Maria Adams and Hagge block. A Hicks kill gave the Lopes a 15-13 advantage at the midway point in the set. CSU would go on a service run and take a lead at 17-16 after a GCU error. The Lopes pulled within 23-22 after a Kovensky kill and CSU error. GCU pulled even at 24-24 after a setting error by the Cougars. Tied at 25-25, CSU got the final points of the set to win 27-25.
In the fourth set, Chicago State led until the Lopes tied it up at 18-18 after kills by Kovensky and DeFalco. GCU would take the lead after a
Kayla Redfield ace, but CSU would score three straight to lead 21-19. The Lopes would then tie it again at 21-21, but CSU scored the final four points to win, 25-21.
GCU is back in action next week when it hosts Utah Valley and Seattle.
