The Grand Canyon beach volleyball head coach, Kristen Rohr, announced the hiring of assistant coach Joe Rich to her staff for the 2017-18 season.
"I am really excited to bring on Joe to our program," Rohr said. "He not only brings a wealth of knowledge, but also a strong passion for the game. He has a great history of developing beach athletes and getting them to the next level. We had the opportunity to work together at some camps this past year and we have similar philosophies and goals on where we want to take this program."
After a year in which the Lopes were ranked in the AVCA Top-15 every week of 2017, ranking as high as number 10 in the country, Rohr will look to build on last year's success with the addition of Rich.
"I would like to thank Kristen Rohr and Vice President of Athletics Mike Vaught for this opportunity and their support," Rich said. "I am excited to join the staff and get going on this season. Coach Rohr has done a great job taking the program to where it is and I cannot wait to see the success this year."
Rich, a native of Chicago, Illinois, has over 25 years of coaching experience, both on the beach and on the hardwood.
Rich played volleyball for the All-Marine team from 1991-1995 and played professional volleyball from 1996-2000.
In Rich's five years of professional beach volleyball starting in 1996, Rich played on three notable tours including the MPVA, EVP Tour and most notably the AVP Tour.
Along with his professional career starting in 1996, so did his coaching career, starting at Network Volleyball Club.
Since 2005, Rich has coached indoor volleyball players that are transitioning to the sand courts, mentoring them in their transition and coaching them on the slight differences between the ways athletes approach each game.
From 2010 to 2014, Rich began coaching at DEVA and Epic United Volleyball Club, and from 2014 to 2017, Rich owned Diggz of NWI, which operated seven indoor volleyball courts and two sand volleyball courts. Rich also acted as the club director and as an instructor to players of the club.
