PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Grand Canyon women's soccer team heads back to Flagstaff, Arizona at the Max Spilsbury Field on Friday to face Nevada (1-2) in a 4 p.m. match before taking on Detroit Mercy (2-0-1) on Sunday for a 10:00 a.m. pitch. The Lopes meet both opponents for the first time in the history of the program. Live stats will be available for both games.
GCU earned its first victory of the season on Sunday, as the Lopes defeated Weber State in overtime, 2-1, to advance to 1-3 on the year. Senior defender
Madison Cox scored both the game-tying and game-winning goal to secure the victory.
Scouting Nevada
The Wolfpack began 2017 with a 2-0 loss to Fordham at home. Two days later, Nevada defeated Sacramento, 3-2, to even the record to 1-1. The Wolfpack played just one game last weekend, as they fell at Portland State, 1-0.
Last season, Nevada was 5-13 overall and 2-9 in the Mountain West conference. The Wolfpack defeated fellow WAC member New Mexico State, 2-0, but suffered a four-game losing streak to end the 2016 campaign. Erin Otagaki is in her first year as head coach of the Nevada Wolf Pack.
Scouting Detroit Mercy
Detroit Mercy began 2017 with a scoreless draw at home versus Toledo. Since the opening tie, the Titans have shut out two-straight opponents in Fort Wayne (3-0) and Lawrence Tech (5-0).
In a midweek matchup with ACC member Pittsburgh, Detroit Mercy fell, 3-1, to drop to 2-1-1 on the season. The Titans were 10-7-2 in 2016 and 6-1-2 in the Horizon League.
After earning a No. 2 seed for the 2016 conference tournament, the Titans fell, 3-2, to Northern Kentucky in the second round to end the 2016 campaign.
