SYRACUSE – The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team hit at a .295 clip with 12 aces to cruise past Siena 25-16, 25-15, 25-12 on Saturday afternoon on the Syracuse campus. The Lopes improve to 2-0 and will face Niagara in the evening to wrap-up their trip to the east coast.
"I am pleased with our defensive effort in this match," said head coach
Tim Nollan. "Holding Siena to a .078 attack percentage was a team effort. We were also able to play many pieces and they stepped in with no drop off, which was nice."
Much like the Syracuse win, the Lopes got stronger as the match progressed. GCU hit .231 in the first set, followed by a .294 mark in set two, and a .343 effort in set three.
It was a balanced attack for the Lopes as
Claire Kovensky led the way with 10 kills, while
Randahl Powers added seven kills.
Teagan DeFalco finished with six kills and no errors (.600), adding seven digs as well.
Heidi Carpenter finished with 24 assists and a team-high four aces (with
Tressa Schuler).
Kayla Redfield and DeFalco also added multiple aces in the match.
Emma Ahern was once again steady in the back row with 15 digs against just one reception error.
Jordan Sanchez,
Kendall Gray and
Melody Horton played well off the bench, coming in with a combined nine kills and just one error in 16 attempts.
Kobie Dunn and
Sarah Hagge also saw their first collegiate action in the sweep of the Saints.
"In terms of the short turnaround before our next match, we will get some food, get some recovery in and watch film," continued Nollan. "Playing two matches in a day is always tough and I expect it to be a very competitive match."
The Lopes take on Niagara to finish action at the Syracuse Tournament at 2:30 PM.
