BARCELONA -- The fast-breaking Grand Canyon men's basketball team plays with a tempo that blurs the players' feet into wheels.
The Lopes really moved on two wheels Wednesday, darting through Barcelona on Segways to tour the historic city. The two-hour trip included a journey through city streets and the Parc de la Ciutadella, a view of the Catalan Parliament, a trip along the beach boardwalk and a look at structures from the 1992 Summer Olympic Games.
The "Dream Team" played in those Olympics in Barcelona, but one of Wednesday's tour guides needed convincing that one of her group's tourists was a "Dream Team II" member. After Lopes assistant coach
Chris Crevelone assisted her with a Google search, the guide asked for a photo with GCU Coach
Dan Majerle.
Lopes senior
Cheick Sy-Savane admittedly had his early struggles on a Segway but not like redshirt freshman Ibrahima Sankare.
"The tall guy actually fell off a couple times on the Segway, which was the best," Sy-Savane said. "He kept claiming that he was the best driver and he was just the absolute worst."
The Lopes turned more heads for their height and GCU gear, prompting questions and photo requests from the locals.
"It was awesome," Sy-Savane said. "Everybody showed nothing but love, and we were blessed enough to feel that."
