PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon baseball team run-ruled Seattle U, 19-0 on Saturday night to even the three-game series at one game apiece. The Lopes poured on 19 runs off 17 hits against the Redhawks to improve to 23-22 (17-3 WAC) record. GCU's 19 runs scored is the most by the Lopes since 2015 when they defeated Bradley 30-7.
The Lopes' 19-0 shutout victory was the team's largest shutout win since they defeated Westmont 21-0 on January 31, 2004.
"It all started with the first inning," head coach
Andy Stankiewicz said. "
Jake Repavich threw some good pitches to get out of a small jam in the first with no runs.
Austin Bull put together a great at bat to begin the game, fouling a couple of pitches off. From there it just started to move pretty good."
With 17 hits on the night, the Lopes scattered six extra-base hits.
Ian Evans led the squad as he went 2-for-3 with two doubles, four RBIs and four runs scored. Evans,
Garrison Schwartz (3),
Preston Pavlica (5) and
Zach Malis (2) accounted for 14 of GCU's 17 RBIs on the night. The five RBIs was a career high for Pavlica.
Meanwhile,
Jake Repavich (6-3) tossed 7.0 shutout innings off only five hits and tied a season-high seven strikeouts. Repavich has now won four consecutive starts. During that span, he owns a 1.24 ERA (4 ER in 29 IP) with 19 strikeouts.
"Jake just knows what he's doing," Stankiewicz said. "Him and
Griffin Barnes worked well together tonight and got into a little bit of a rhythm. He just shut the door and got us back into the dugout."
Behind great pitching is great fielding and the Lopes delivered behind Repavich on Saturday night. From Schwartz's put out to stop an advancing Redhawk at second base to
Griffin Barnes' juggling catch, the Lopes came to play in all three areas of the game.
The Lopes got things started in the opening frame, driving in five run off five hits to take an early 5-0 lead. GCU accomplished this with the first six batters reaching base. Back-to-back singles by Bull and Lerouge put runners on the corners before a wild pitch scored Bull for the Lopes' first run of the game. Schwartz would follow with a double down the right field line to score Lerouge for the second run of the inning. A pair of RBI singles by Pavlica and Malis gave the Lopes a commanding 4-0 lead. Barnes scored the fifth run of the inning with a hard ground ball to score Malis.
GCU continued to pour on the runs as the Lopes drove in 10 runs in the fourth. The Lopes had six hits in the frame, including a three-run triple by Pavlica, three-run double by Evans and a two-run homer from Schwartz.
In the sixth, the Lopes put the final crushing blow on Seattle U after they added an additional four runs to force the 19-0 run-rule to end the competition by the seventh inning. In the frame, a double to deep left-center by Evans scored the Lopes' first run of the game. Malis put the final verdict on the game with a homer to right field.
Up next, the Lopes will take on the Redhawks on Sunday, May 9 at noon MST for the rubber match. In the pitching matchup,
Jack Schneider (4-0, 4.28) is set to face Connor Moore (2-1, 4.50).
