DENVER - Grand Canyon first baseman
Ian Evans was named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week for the time period of April 24-30. It was the second consecutive week that a GCU player won the honor, following up
Garrison Schwartz's recognition last week.
Evans' was the Lopes' offensive leader in a momentous sweep of New Mexico State, cementing Grand Canyon's place atop the WAC standings. The junior went 9-for-13 (.692) over the weekend against the Aggies, slugging two home runs and drawing three walks en route to a .750 on-base percentage.
"
Ian Evans had a great weekend," head coach
Andy Stankiewicz commented. "He's become a mainstay for us in the middle of our lineup. Hitting is contagious. Our guys were seeing the ball up and elevating it better. You have a chance to backspin a ball and hit it into a gap. A few home runs is a bonus."
The transfer from GateWay Community College opened up the weekend with a 4-for-6 performance in the Lopes' thrilling, extra-inning victory over the Aggies. Evans hit the game-tying home run with two outs in the eighth inning, completing a three-run comeback in a game GCU would go on to win 11-9.
After a 2-for-4 day on Saturday, Evans came back on Sunday with a three-hit performance and two drawn walks. He also drove in two more runs, running his total to six on the weekend.
The Lopes have now claimed five weekly conference honors on the season, more than any other school. In addition to Schwartz's honor last week,
Austin Bull also won a Hitter of the Week award while
Jake Wong has been named Pitcher of the Week on two occasions.
