DENVER - For the second time this season, Grand Canyon right-handed pitcher
Jake Wong was named the Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week the conference announced on Monday morning. The sophomore threw 7.1 two-hit, shutout innings in the Lopes' series-opening combined shutout win over Northern Colorado.
"The key to tonight was my slider," Wong said after Friday's victory. "Dropping the slider and being able to land it really helped me out."
Wong allowed just two hits and struck out five over 7.1 innings to earn the win in Friday's WAC series opener against Northern Colorado. He retired 12 consecutive batters from the fourth to eighth innings as he earned his third scoreless outing of at least six innings this season. He currently leads the WAC with a 1.36 earned run average in seven appearances, holding a 3-1 record on the year.
"It's definitely a fun gig," Wong said of having the Friday night starter role. "You get to set the tone for the series and get the series off on the right note, it's always a good opportunity. I'm thankful for the opportunity and I'm going to do my best every week."
Wong
claimed the Pitcher of the Week for his opening weekend 6.0-inning, one-hit performance against then-No. 22 Oklahoma State. He later pitched another 7.0-inning, two-hit, scoreless performance at Pepperdine. Friday's outing marked the first time in his career that he worked into the eighth inning.
"
Jake Wong did a fantastic job," Stankiewicz said after the win. "He pounded the strike zone. We made some nice plays and were able to jump out in front a little bit. He got stronger (as the game went on). He's a big, physical, strong young man. He made some big pitches and started rolling really well. He has to want the ball and go deep in games like he did."
At the mid-way point of the season, the Lopes have already surpassed last year's total in weekly WAC honors with three on the season. Fellow sophomore
Austin Bull was
named WAC Hitter of the Week last week.
NM State's Tristen Carranza earned Hitter of the Week honors for a three-homer week.
