PHOENIXÂ -- The Grand Canyon softball program lost two games at the hands of Seattle U on Friday night.
GCU failed to contain the Redhawk offensive attack in Game 1 in the 8-2 defeat. Intensity and fight in Game 2 made way for a 12 inning contest as GCU found itself at the losing end at 7-3.Â
The Lopes fall to 25-13 on the season and 0-2 in WAC play.Â

Loriann Olson both went 3-for-8 on the day. Coates picked up two RBI, while Olson plated once.Â

Game 1 | GCU 2 Seattle U 8
The Lopes opened WAC play against a hungry and aggressive Seattle U squad. They struck early taking the advantage in the top of the second frame.Â
In the top of the second, the Redhawks came out with a bang, hitting a home run down the right field line to take the 1-0 lead. Seattle U continued the pressure piling on four more runs before GCU closed down the inning down 5-0.Â
The Lopes answered, plating a pair off of big Seattle U mistakes. The Redhawks walked bothÂ

Coates made them pay doubling to the left center wall scoring Olson to put the Lopes within two at 5-2.Â
White GCU's defense kept the Redhawks scoreless through the third and fourth innings, Seattle U broke through one again in the fifth. They added a run to extend its lead to 6-2. GCU went on to give up two more runs to the Redhawks in the final frame, struggling to answer on offense and fell in a 8-2 finish.Â
Coates led at the plate with a 2-for-3 day which included a double and RBI.Â
Game 2 | GCU 3 Seattle U 7 (12 IN)
The second game of the day started with an intensity that pushed a four extra inning contest that came to a halt in the top of the 12th. The Lopes suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Seattle U as they gave up five runs in the 12th, a total that proved insurmountable. GCU outhit the Redhawks 12-9, but it just wasn't enough.Â
Although the contest started with three scoreless innings, both teams got on the board in the fourth. GCU gave up a Seattle U run, but answered in the home half of the inning.
GCU started aggressive with back-to-back bunts fromÂ
Sierra Smith and Olson that left Seattle U scrambling to snag first and second.Â
Megan Stevens moved them over to threaten and Coates sent a bullet through the left side for the RBI single to even the tally at 1-1.Â
While the pitching duel continued until the seventh inning, both team's put up runs leaving the game locked after regulation.Â
Lights out pitching and excellent defense failed to move the score for four straight innings. In the 12th, Seattle U put together a five-run four-hit inning to take a 7-2 lead.Â
GCU remained vigilant, starting off the home half of the inning with a Gonzalez homer to left center to bring GCU back within four at 7-3.Â
Shea Smith drew the free pass,Â
Camree Wartman replaced her at first off a fielder's choice.Â
Sierra Smith followed with a base hit to push Wartman over and land on first. Unfortunately, that was the closest GCU would come as the rally fell short in the 7-3 loss.Â
Niki Gonzalez went 3-for-6 with a home run and and two RBI.Â
Mariah Valencia pitched an outstanding game. Through 12 innings of work, she allowed seven runs, but held Seattle U scoreless for nine innings and four innings straight after regulation. She struc kout four and walked just three through 49 batters faced.Â
