The Grand Canyon men's golf team returns to action this week when it travels to the Sacramento State Invitational at Valley Hi Country Club in Elk Grove, Calif. The course is a par 72, 7,010 yard lay out.
The Tournament will begin with 36 holes on Monday, March 6 and conclude with the final 18 on Tuesday, March 7. Sacramento State is the preseason favorite to win the Big Sky.
Joining GCU and Sac St. in the tourney will be Air Force, Austin Peay, British Columbia, Bakersfield, Fullerton, Nebraska Omaha, Nevada, North Dakota, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara and Weber State.
Sacramento State has won the last two titles, winning in 2015 (-10) and 2016 (-13).
The Lopes picked up this spring right where they left off in the fall. Having won two tournaments and a runner-up in the fall, GCU finished 9
th in the 18-team John A Burns Invitational last week in Hawaii. While 9
th-place may not sound great at first, the field was very strong consisting of 11 top-100 schools, seven of which were in the top-50.
The Lopes were led by
Vinnie Murphy in Hawaii, claiming a top-20 finish. Murphy has taken over the GCU lead in stroke average at 72.17, and a team-high 13 rounds of par or better.
Jake Chanen (72.83) and
Matt McClung (72.76) have both claimed individual titles this season. Playing at the No. 4 spot,
Billy Comeaux has a top-5 finish and
Hayden Webb has three of his last six rounds come in at 73 or better.
After the Sac State Invitational, GCU will host the GCU Invitational at GCU Golf Course on March 17-18.
