The Grand Canyon men's basketball team goes for the season sweep over the Vaqueros at GCU Arena as they host UTRGV on Thursday, February 9. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. MST and will be broadcasted live in the Phoenix area on Cox 7 Arizona and streamed online at
GCU.tv and ESPN3. Barry Buetel will be providing play-by-play with analyst Scott Williams and Kate Longworth on the sideline.
GCU fans can listen live as Michael Potter and Tom Kuyper will be airing on Fox Sports 910 AM or the iHeart Radio App. The pregame show will start 15 minutes before tip and conclude with a postgame show featuring comments from head coach
Dan Majerle.
- Grand Canyon seeks their fifth consecutive win over UTRGV as the Vaqueros visit GCU Arena, where the Lopes have won 10 of their last 11 home games.
- The Lopes won their first road game of the season, defeating UTRGV 79-66 on Jan. 14. Keonta Vernon scored a then career-best 20 points, while adding 9 rebounds and 2 steals.
- Joshua Braun was named Academic All-District 8 First-Team for the second consecutive season. Braun was also named First-Team Academic All-American last season.
DeWayne Russell leads the WAC in both scoring and assists, averaging 22.5 points per game while dishing out an average of 5.0 assists per game. Russell led the WAC in assists in 2015-16.
- Braun and Russell rank second and third in the WAC in scoring in conference play, averaging 20.3 and 18.7 points, respectively. In conference-only play, Russell also leads in assists (6.6) and minutes played (40.6).
- With Russell's 12 points against CSU Bakersfield last Saturday, he has now scored in double-figures in 25-straight games, the most by a GCU player in the Division I era.
- Russell is averaging 22.5 points per game, ranking ninth in the NCAA. Central Michigan's Marcus Keene leads the country (30.7).
- Russell ranks second in the country in minutes played, averaging 38.5 per game. Russell has played at least 38 minutes in 15-of-21 games this season.
- Gerard Martin is the only GCU player to start and play in all 24 games this season. Russell and Braun have started every game they've played, but each has missed time.
- Lew Hill is in his first season as head coach at UTRGV. He has served as an assistant at South Alabama, Southeast Missouri State, East Carolina, Texas A&M, UNLV and Oklahoma.
- The Vaqueros are 1-11 on the road this season, after most recently falling to Seattle U 96-84 on Jan. 28. UTRGV's lone road win this season came in their conference opener at Chicago State.
- UTRGV features the high scoring duo of Nick Dixon and Antonio Green, averaging 18.5 and 17.7 points per game, respectively. Green ranks No. 1 in the country in 3-pointers, with 100 made on the season.
