The Grand Canyon men's basketball seeks its 11th straight win at home a as the host defending WAC Tournament champion CSU Bakersfield at GCU Arena on Saturday, Feb. 4. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. MST and will be broadcasted live in the Phoenix area on CW6 and streamed online at
GCU.tv. Out of market broadcast will also be available on ESPN3 (Subject to blackout within Arizona). Barry Buetel will be providing play-by-play with analyst Scott Williams and Kate Longworth on the sideline.
GCU fans can listen live as Michael Potter and Tom Kuyper will be airing on Fox Sports 910 AM Phoenix as well as online on the iHeart Radio App. The pregame show will start 15 minutes before tip and conclude with a postgame show featuring comments from head coach
Dan Majerle.
- Grand Canyon hosts CSU Bakersfield at GCU Arena where they have won 10 straight games. The Lopes won the first five matchups between the two schools at the Division I level, before CSUB snapped the streak at the Icardo Center on Feb. 27, 2016.
- The Lopes outscored Bethesda 51-23 in the first half to cruise to a 95-66 win on Tuesday night at GCU Arena. Joshua Braun snapped out of a recent slump, scoring 17 points and grabbing 8 rebounds in only 18 minutes of play. Braun shot 5-of-7 from the field, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range.
- DeWayne Russell leads the WAC in both scoring and assists, averaging 23.1 points per game while dishing out an average of 5.0 assists per game. Russell led the WAC in assists in 2015-16.
- Braun and Russell rank second and fourth in the WAC in scoring in conference play, averaging 21.7 and 19.2 points, respectively. In conference-only play, Russell also leads in assists (6.5) and minutes played (41.3).
- With Russell's 25 points against Chicago State in a double-OT win last Saturday, he has now scored in double-figures in 24-straight games, the most by a GCU player in the Division I era.
- Russell is averaging 23.1 points per game, ranking seventh in the NCAA. Central Michigan's Marcus Keene leads the country (30.0).
- Russell ranks first in the country in minutes played, averaging 38.6 per game. Russell has played at least 38 minutes in 15-of-20 games this season.
- Gerard Martin is the only GCU player to start and play in all 23 games this season. Russell and Braun have started every game they've played, but each has missed time.
- Rod Barnes is in his sixth season as head coach of CSU Bakersfield and 18th season overall as a head coach. Barnes has a 95-85 record with the Roadrunners and 281-274 overall record, including four NCAA Tournament appearances. CSUB went 24-9 in 2015-16, capturing the WAC Tournament championship and a NCAA Tournament first round appearance.
- The 'Runners had back-to-back WAC road win last week with a 75-59 win over Chicago State and a 74-63 win over UMKC. CSUB has recorded 8.3 steals per game (25th in NCAA) and forces 17.0 turnovers per game (14th in NCAA).
- Senior guard Jaylin Airington leads the team with an average of 15.0 points per contest while sophomore guard Daminye Durham has added 14.0 per game for the 'Runners.
