KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Grand Canyon women's basketball team dropped a 77-65 decision to UMKC on Saturday afternoon at Swinney Recreation Center. The Lopes pulled within five points in the final quarter but the Roos took care of the basketball and hit free-throws to seal the win.
With the loss, GCU drops to 15-11, 7-6 Western Athletic Conference, while UMKC improves to 8-18, 3-10 WAC.
GCU was led by
Brie Mobley with 25 points and seven rebounds. Mobley converted 10-for-19 from the field.
Zelor Massaquoi was also in double-figures with 17 points (6-for-7 FGs) with six rebounds in 30 minutes.
UMKC took a 19-10 lead after the first quarter, but GCU put together its best quarter of the game in the second, pulling within 32-30 at halftime. The Lopes outscored the Roos 20-13 in the second quarter.
With the Lopes down 10 to start the fourth quarter, GCU pulled within 64-59 at the 3:26 mark after a three-pointer by
August Touchard. UMKC would score the next two baskets to increase the lead to 68-59 with 1:58 remaining. The Roos hit their final six free-throws to prevent GCU from coming back.
UMKC was led by India Johnson with 17 points. Samantha Waldron added 16 for the Roos.
UMKC shot 46 percent, compared to 43 percent by GCU. The Roos converted 19-of-22 from the free-throw line, while GCU finished 13-for-19. UMKC held a slight 32-31 edge in rebounding.
GCU is back in action on Saturday, March 4 when it hosts Bakersfield at 2:00 PM in GCU Arena.
