The Grand Canyon men's basketball wil play in front of a national television audience as they head to Talking Stick Resort Arena in downtown Phoenix to face St. John's in the second game of the BBVA Compass Valley of the Sun Shootout on Tuesday, Dec. 5. Tip off is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. MST and will be broadcasted across the country on ESPNU and streamed online on the WatchESPN App and ESPN3. Chuckie Kempf will be handling play-by-play duties with Adrian Branch providing color analysis.
GCU fans can listen live as Michael Potter and Tom Kuyper will be airing on 1580 AM The Fanatic as well as online via The Fanatic website or mobile app. The pregame show will start 15 minutes before tip and conclude with a postgame show featuring comments from head coach
Dan Majerle.
GCU QUICK NOTES:
- Grand Canyon will play their first non-home game of the season, as they travel 7.5 miles down the road for the BBVA Compass Valley of the Sun Shootout.
- Tuesday's game will be the first time the Lopes have been on national TV since squaring off again Arizona on ESPNU last December.
- Since 2015-16, the Lopes are 4-0 on neutral courts, most recently defeating Marist 84-72 to claim the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Springfield Bracket championship last November.
- GCU ranks sixth in the country in scoring defense (58.5 points per game). In the last three seasons, GCU is 24-2 when allowing 61 points or less.
- Casey Benson set a career high with 4 steals against Riverside and is posting career-high averages for points (11.0), assists (5.3) rebounds (4.7), and steals (1.3) on the season.
- Dating back to last season, the Lopes have won 19 of their last 21 home games at GCU Arena.
- The Lopes rank 10th in the country in effective opponent field goal percentage at 41.8 percent. Effective field goal percentage factors in weighted figures for 3-point field goals.
- GCU leads the WAC in scoring defense (58.5), scoring margin (13.4), field goal percentage defense (38.2), three-point field goal percentage defense (26.4), blocks (4.8), assists (16.7), turnover margin (+3.33) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.1).
- Following a three steal performance against UC Riverside, Oscar Frayer leads the WAC in steals, averaging 3.0 per game. Benson is tied with CSU Bakersfied's Brent Wrapp for the WAC lead in assists (5.3).
- GCU ranks sixth in the country in attendance relative to stadium capacity, averaging 101.3 percent of stadium capacity this season. That includes three games where students were on fall break.
- Head coach Dan Majerle makes his return to Talking Stick Resort Arena, where he played four seasons and coached five seasons for the Phoenix Suns.
