SEATTLE, Wash. – The Grand Canyon women's basketball team faced its second-to-last road test of 2017 and the Lopes suffered a 79-65 setback to Washington at the Hec Edmundson Pavilion on Sunday afternoon in Seattle. The Lopes met Pac-12 member UW for the second time in as many years.
Grand Canyon falls to 2-8 on the year, while the Huskies advance to 5-4.
Senior
Brie Mobley led the Lopes in scoring with 14 points on the game, while the pair of redshirt seniors
August Touchard and
Jessica Gajewski had 13 points apiece and redshirt senior
Jordan Jackson added 12.
Sophomore
Vanessa Murphy added nine points on the game, while freshman
Camille Hailey contributed four. Murphy and Mobley had eight rebounds each, while Touchard added six boards to the GCU defensive effort.
Mobley led GCU in all three categories in today's game, as the guard had a team-best five assists as well. Jackson had three.
The Lopes outscored the Huskies in the second (17-16) and fourth (26-23) quarters in today's game, but weren't able to take the lead away from the home team.
In the first half, the Lopes were down by as much as 18 points (40-22) with 3 minutes, 59 seconds to play in the second quarter. GCU converted a 9-2 run to come within 11, 42-31, heading to the locker room for halftime.
The third quarter proved to be the Lopes weak link in today's game, as GCU trailed by as much as 19 points (53-34) until Mobley broke a five-minute scoring drought with a jumper at the 1:52 mark.
The Lopes fought back in the fourth quarter and outscored the Huskies by three, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit and the Lopes ended up behind, 79-65.
Grand Canyon closes out the 2017 road slate on Thursday, December 14 at Northern Arizona. Tipoff is set for Noon (MT).
The Lopes will then return to the GCU Arena on Monday, Dec. 18 and Thursday, Dec. 21 for 2 p.m. contests against Southern Utah and Santa Clara, respectively. Admission to all GCU women's basketball games is free of charge.
