LAS CRUCES, N.M. –
McKenzie Cook netted an equalizer for GCU in the 23rd minute of the game, but it wasn't enough for the Grand Canyon women's soccer team as the Lopes (3-10-1, 0-2-0 WAC) were outlasted in double overtime by New Mexico State (7-6-2, 1-0-1 WAC), 2-1, on Sunday afternoon in Las Cruces.
Cook had a game-high six shots on the day, including two on frame. Her goal marks the second of the season for the junior.
GCU doubled up on the Aggies in total shots, 22-11, while NMSU led the race in shots on frame, 7-5.
Sophomore
Anyssa De Vera tallied four shots on the day, while senior
Madison Cox had three. The pair of
Milla Benedetti and
Amanda Lopez each had two, while the group of
Hannah Nichols,
Camryn Larson,
Kelsey Smith,
Jessica Wong and
MJ Carrieres each had one apiece. Larson made her first collegiate start in today's match.
The Aggies netted the first goal of the game off a breakaway and cross ball in the 13th minute of the contest to take an early lead. Cook evened it up with an unassisted score in the 23rd minute.
The pair battled through 79 minutes and 40 seconds, before New Mexico State's Devin Hart scored her second goal of the contest in the second overtime period to clinch the victory for the Aggies.
Lopes outshot Aggies 14-3 in the first half, including Cook's game-high five within the first 45 minutes of play.
Senior goalkeeper
Blakely Fraasch made a total of five saves on the day, while NMSU keeper Dmitri Fong made four.
The Lopes return home for a pair of games at the GCU Soccer Stadium next weekend. Grand Canyon hosts Chicago State on Friday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. and returns to host Kansas City on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. Admission is free of charge.
