PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon men's basketball team secured its 10
th-straight win at home, dominating the Bethesda Flames with a final score of 95-66. The Lopes improve to 11-2 at home and 15-8 on the season.
Joshua Braun,
Oscar Frayer,
Keonta Vernon and
Fiifi Aidoo all racked up points in the double digits, with Aidoo achieving a career-high of 16. Braun led the Lopes with eight rebounds, shooting 5-for-7 from the field, while Carr contributed seven assists and 4-for-7 from the field.
The Lopes dominated the scoreboard for the first 14 minutes of the half, going on a 16-0 run with triples by Braun and
Gerard Martin. The powerhouse GCU offense continued to rack up points, with another three-pointer by Aidoo, taking a lead of 26 with just under eight minutes remaining. The Flames kicked it up a notch with a run over an eight minute stretch, but the Lopes maintained a solid lead and closed out the high-scoring half with a dunk by Aidoo just seconds before the buzzer, climbing to 51-23.
The Lopes controlled the half in nearly every aspect, shooting 46 percent from the field, nearly twice as much as the Flames' shooting percentage. They hit 30.8 percent of their field goal attempts and led 28-20 in rebounds.
"We were very active and played hard," head coach
Dan Majerle said. "We allowed them one bad shot, got some rebounds, and we were able to get out and run. It kind of set the tone early. We played really well in the first half and in the second half, we kind of let them do what they want."
In the first three minutes of the second half, the Lopes allowed the Flames eight points, including two triples, before they went on an 8-0 run to secure a solid lead. With just under 13 minutes to go in the half, Kenzo Nudo's three-pointer brought the Lopes up 76-42. With a little bit more back-and-forth action than the previous half, both teams stepped up their defense before the Lopes closed out the half 95-66.
It was their first time scoring over 90 points in a game since scoring 104 against Omaha on Dec. 13, 2015.
"We did what we were supposed to do, which was to come out here and win convincingly," said Majerle. "It was good we were able to get some guys some time. Fiifi got some playing time, hopefully getting his confidence going and starting to figure some things out. Overall, it was a pretty good performance."
The Lopes will return to their home court on Saturday, Feb. 4 to host CSU Bakersfield at 7:00 p.m.
