The Grand Canyon men's basketball team continues its conference road trip trough the Midwest as they head to Chicago, Ill., where the Lopes will look to get back into the win column as they face the Chicago State Cougars. Tip-off from the Jones Convocation Center is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. MST. The game will not be available for video broadcast or streaming, but Lopes fans can listen live as Michael Potter and Tom Kuyper will be airing on KYFI2 1230 AM or the iHeart Radio App. The pregame show will start at 12:50 p.m. MST and conclude with a postgame show featuring comments from head coach
Dan Majerle.
- Grand Canyon and Chicago State meet for the seventh time in school history. Last season, the Lopes won both games against the Cougars after dropping a pair against them in the 2014-15 season.
- GCU fell to 1-6 on the road this season with a 83-77 loss at UMKC on Thursday night. DeWayne Russell led all scorers with 27 points and Keonta Vernon recorded his fifth double-double of the season.
- DeWayne Russell leads the WAC in both scoring and assists, averaging 22.9 points per game while dishing out an average of 4.8 assists per game. Russell led the WAC in assists in 2015-16.
- Russell and Braun rank second and fourth in the WAC in scoring in conference play, averaging 21.0 and 19.2 points, respectively. In conference-only play, Russell also leads in assists (6.2) and minutes played (39.6).
- With Russell's 27 points against the Roos on Thursday, he has now scored in double-figures in 24-straight games, the most by a GCU player in the Division I era.
- Russell is averaging 22.9 points per game, ranking ninth in the NCAA. Central Michigan's Marcus Keene leads the country (29.8).
- Russell ranks third in the country in minutes played, averaging 38.0 per game. Russell has played at least 39 minutes in 12-of-19 games this season. Martin is the only GCU player to start and play in all 21 games this season. Russell and Braun have started every game they've played, but each has missed time.
- The Lopes lead the WAC with a +1.81 turnover margin. They also rank third in field goal percentage (.439) and steals (7.5).
- Tracy Dildy is in his seventh season as head coach at Chicago State, compiling a career record of 52-162 in 214 games at the helm.
- The Cougars lost their second-straight game on Thursday night, falling to CSU Bakersfield 75-59 at the Jones Convocation Center. Fred Sims Jr. led the Cougars in scoring with 15 points, while Trayvon Palmer added 14 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists.
