BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Grand Canyon baseball team completed the sweep over CSU Bakersfield with a 9-6 win on the road. The Lopes did their damage early in the game scoring seven runs in the first three innings to improve to 15-12 this season and 4-2 in the Western Athletic Conference.
When GCU was able to get runners on base, it capitalized hitting .333 as a team with runners on base and .416 with two outs as the Lopes never trailed in the game. GCU used four pitchers in the final game against Bakersfield combining for seven strikeouts.
Tyler Wyatt was solid out of the bullpen, pitching 3.2 innings while only giving up two hits and one run.
Heading into Sunday's game, freshman
Zach Malis had three RBI this season and against CSUB, Malis brought in four runs with two doubles. After GCU scored four runs in the first two innings, Bakersfield tied the ball game in the bottom of the second to tie the game but the Lopes quickly recovered in the top of the third inning. After
Austin Bull reached third base on a
Garrison Schwartz double and
Preston Pavlica walked, Malis doubled down right field to score Bull and Schwartz. Pavlica scored on a wild pitch for the third run of the inning.
The Lopes tacked on runs in the fifth and sixth inning to make it nine runs while the bullpen limited the Roadrunners to six runs off 10 hits.
Gabe Benavides picked up his first career win at GCU after coming in for relief for
Mick Vorhof, pitching 1.1 innings allowing one run.
It was an impressive weekend for GCU at the plate, scoring nine runs in all three games and combined for 30 hits as a team. In the three-game series at Bakersfield, Pavlica led GCU with seven RBI off five hits.
GCU returns home for a quick turnaround, facing UNLV at home on Monday, April 4. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Brazell Stadium.
