DENVER - Freshman first baseman
Zach Malis has been named Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week, as announced by the conference on Monday morning. It marks the first career selection for Malis and the second time a GCU player has been recognized this season.
Malis posted three multi-hit games in a three-game sweep at North Dakota. His best game came on Saturday, going 2-for-4 with a home run, three runs and an RBI. He also drove in three runs in Sunday's sweep-clinching win.
Malis has raised his batting average to .325 through the series at North Dakota and has started 13 consecutive games for the Lopes. His 16 RBIs in WAC play is good for second in the conference. He is also on a seven-game hitting streak, which is the longest such streak of his young career.
Preston Pavlica won GCU's only other WAC Player of the Week nomination on March 7.
Grand Canyon will resume play with a trip to Kansas to face Kansas and Kansas State on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.
