PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon men's volleyball team suffered a tough home loss to No. 12 Loyola-Chicago on Friday night. After winning the first set, the Lopes dropped the final two sets to lose by scores of 25-23, 19-25, 31-33 and 18-25. Grand Canyon's record falls to 14-11 on the season and 7-8 MIVA play.
Despite the loss,
Shalev Saada and
Gerrard Lipscombe had 16 kills each, combining for 32 of GCU's 51 kills in the game. Saada added a team-high eight digs with an assist on the match.
"We fought hard," head coach
Matt Werle said. "Through the first three sets we did not let the deficit get us down but we lost the serve and pass game tonight. They were able to get their middles involved, who are very good, and we weren't able to slow them down."
In the first set, GCU tallied 13 kills with only four errors. The Lopes were in a quick 10-5 hole before scoring five straight points to tie. The rest of the set, the two teams traded points until the end where the Lopes closed out the set by scoring the last two points off of a strong kill by Saada set up by
Michael Milstein and an attacking error by the Ramblers.
The Ramblers quickly picked up the tempo during the last three sets as they refused to give the Lopes a chance to capitalize on LUC's 17 errors in four sets. Leading the Ramblers in kills, Jeff Jendryk tallied 20 kills, committing only two errors on Friday night.
Set 3 was the most impressive as the Lopes had a match-high 16 skills with only six errors. The six GCU errors turned out to be costly as the Ramblers took the set, scoring 33-31 over the Lopes.
Christian Ward recorded five kills with a team-high five blocks while Milstein led the team with 42 digs, adding two kills with one error.
Grand Canyon will look to bounce back as they take on the Ramblers again on Saturday evening beginning at 6 p.m.
