The Grand Canyon men's basketball team hits the road for their final game of the 2015-16 regular season as they take on the Utah Valley Wolverines on Saturday, March 5, 2016 at 2:05 at the UCCU Center. It will be the seventh all-time matchup in the series and the two schools have split the previous six matchups 3-3.
Saturday's game will be broadcasted nationally on the American Sports Network (ASN) and will be picked up locally by COX 7 Arizona. Daron Sutton and Rich Zosec will be calling the game.
The Lopes will look to snap a two-game losing streak after dropping a tough non-conference matchup with No. 24 Saint Mary's on Tuesday night in Moraga, Calif. GCU found itself in a quick 10-0 hole and scored a season-low 19 points in the first half. The Lopes shot just 26 percent from the field and were a dreadful 1-of-9 from 3-point range in the first half. They made up for it in the second half, shooting 63 percent and pulling within two points before eventually falling 73-64.
Grandy Glaze led the Lopes with 16 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field and nine rebounds, while
Ryan Majerle came off the bench to score 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting from behind the arc.
"We struggled a little bit offensively but we played really hard, we tried," head coach
Dan Majerle said after the game. "We did a great job on the boards in the first half. This is a great rebounding team. Saint Mary's is a good rebounding team and we out-rebounded them by two and that's good. I was happy with our effort. Hopefully this is something we can build on. We have to find a way to go to Utah Valley and get a win."
In their previous matchup this season, the Lopes scored a season-best 99 points in regulation as they held off the Wolverines in an uptempo high-scoring game, 99-88, at GCU Arena on Jan. 16.
Joshua Braun scored a career-best 34 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field while also hitting 17-of-19 free throws to pace the Lopes. Glaze recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds as five GCU players scored in double-figures.
The Wolverines saw their two-game winning streak come to a heartbreaking end last week as they lost on a last-second buzzer beater at Seattle U on Saturday night. Konner Frey and Ivory Young each had 17 points to lead Utah Valley and four players total scored in double-figures. The Wolverines hit 14 3-pointers, their second highest total of the season, but it wasn't enough as they dropped to 12-16 on the season and 6-7 in WAC play. They are currently locked in as the No. 4 seed for the upcoming WAC Basketball Tournament at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nev.
Grand Canyon is not eligible to compete in the WAC Tournament this season, but recently learned will host their first round game of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.
