Phelps, Owuama named Student-Athletes of the Month

Grand Canyon student-athletes have their sights set on more than just winning on the competition field. With the help of the Academic and Student-Athlete Development staff, the Lopes are looking to provide leadership in the classroom and the community in addition to their roles on their respective teams.
Each month, GCULopes.com will feature two Lopes who are excelling in all three of these important phases of college life. Congratulations to the honorees for March 2016: Mackenzie Phelps and Uzo Owuama.

| In the classroom Projected spring GPA: 3.90 Current overall GPA: 4.00 Major: accounting Phelps graduated in the fall of 2014 with a bachelor's degree in accounting with a 3.93 GPA and is now working toward her master's degree. |
| In the community Phelps has made great contributions to the local community by giving her time to a number of worthwhile endeavors, including the Run to Fight Children's Cancer and Serve the City. |
| On the court Phelps has been a superstar on the sand court, earn an appearance in the AVCA national championships each of the past two seasons. Along with partner Shannon Dugan, Phelps reached the pairs national semifinals last year and was named a 2015 All-American. |

| In the classroom Current overall GPA:3.62 Major: psychology Not only has Owuama been a leader in the classroom, but he has also led by example among his peers by serving on the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC). |
| In the community Owuama has worked more than 100 hours with St. Mary's Food Bank along with quality time serving the Run to Fight Children's Cancer. Additionally, he has served as a mentor at St. Vincent DePaul in his spare time. |
| On the mat Owuama earned top honors after being crowned champion at the National Collegiate Open following a title-match victory against Michael Hayes from Old Dominion. Owuama finished ahead of wrestlers from Rutgers, Kent State, Ohio and American to cap the year. |
