Lopes remain on top after dominating LMU, Irvine Valley

PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon beach volleyball team shot to 10-1 on the season after defeating Loyola Marymount and Irvine Valley College on Monday in Huntington Beach.
"This was a great win for us," head coach Kristen Rohr said. "We are learning to compete and win when faced with adversity. This was our first competition in a beach environment; it's definitely different wind and I was proud of how we made adjustments and pushed through to clinch the win."
Aleksandra Wachowicz and Molly Turner played an exceptional set, quickly closing in on a win over their opponents with scores of 21-12, 21-10. After two, three-set matches, Kami Dickerson and Brooke Razo pulled off a 21-16, 16-21, 15-11 victory while Mackenzie Phelps and Shannon Dugan fell 15-13 on the tie-breaker set, their first loss of the season. Chloe Jenkins and Rebecca Conrad scored 21-16 on both sets to round out the final match score of 3-2 in favor of GCU.
The Lopes didn't let the close first match get to their heads, turning right around and sweeping Irvine Valley College 5-0. Dickerson and Razo, Wachowicz and Turner, and Jenkins and Conrad all went 2-0 for the day. Phelps and Dugan rebounded from their close loss earlier in the day, walking away from both sets with a 21-12 victory.
The Lopes now hold onto a nine-match winning streak as they head to El Cajon, Calif. on Tuesday, March 22 to face Grossmont College at 10 a.m. MST and San Diego Mesa at 12 p.m. MST.
