Fresh off their first postseason win since transitioning to Division I, the Grand Canyon men's basketball team sets its sight on the quarterfinals of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) as they host the Jackson State Tigers on Thursday night. Tip-off from Grand Canyon University Arena is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. MST.
The Lopes second-round matchup with the Tigers will be the first time the two schools have played against each other. Jackson State travels to Phoenix days after edging out Sam Houston State 81-77 in an overtime thriller in Huntsville, Texas on Monday night. The Tigers led by 17 points at halftime but were outscored 40-23 in the second half to force overtime. In the extra period, Chance Franklin scored six points in the final 47 seconds to help give the Tigers their first postseason win since 1993.
GCU was in a similar position on Monday night, using a hot-shooting first half to build up a 14-point lead in the Coach John McLendon Classic after a 19-4 run helped erase a 13-12 lead by South Carolina State.
Matt Jackson and
Joshua Braun combined to hit five first-half three points as the Lopes hit eight of their first 11 attempts from behind the arc. Despite the hot offensive start, poor defense kept the Bulldogs in the game, as South Carolina State shot 60 percent from the field in the first half.
"They didn't do anything we hadn't see before, it just comes down to guarding and playing our type of basketball," head coach
Dan Majerle said after the game. "We did a poor job, especially in the first half. What kept us in it was our 3-point shooting early in the game and then we went cold in the second half and didn't make any free throws."
As Majerle mentioned, the hot shooting would not continue in the second half as GCU's field goal percentage plummeted to just 38.5 percent, including missing on their last 13 3-point attempts. The Lopes also struggled from the free throw line where they hit just 16-of-34 attempts in the game.
"I'm disappointed in our free throw shooting, but it's a win," Majerle added. "It's another step in the right direction for our program as far as winning a CIT game, so that was big. The best thing about it is we don't get to think about it too much. We get to tee it up again on Thursday."
Braun was able hit 4-of-4 free throws in the final seconds of the game to preserve the win. The first-team All-WAC honoree led the Lopes in scoring with 16 points.
Grandy Glaze was named the McLendon Classic MVP after recording his 13th double-double of the season, scoring 15 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Jackson was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field, including two 3-pointers, to score 12 points off the bench.
De'Andre Davis and
DeWayne Russell added 11 and 10 points respectively.
Thursday's winner will advance to the CIT quarterfinals, set to play March 22-24, depending on opponent.
