PHOENIX -- The Lopes do not have to wait long to return to the field after being handed back-to-back losses for the first time in 2016. Grand Canyon, having only played one road game previously, heads to Houston for its first series away from Brazell Stadium. The Cougars have been ranked as high as No. 9 in the national polls but took a tumble after a streak of five consecutive losses in the second week of the season. The three-game series features Friday, Saturday and Sunday contests with first pitch set for 4:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 11 a.m. Arizona Time, respectively.
LAST TIME OUTAfter taking 2 of 3 from Cal Poly over the weekend, the Lopes dropped two games to New Mexico in a mid-week series where GCU's starting pitching struggled. The Lobos, who entered the two-game series with a top-15 batting average in the country (.323), posted 10 of their 16 runs in the first two innings of Tuesday's and Wednesday's games.
Grand Canyon dug itself a 7-0 hole in the opener, allowing three runs in each of the first and second innings. The Lopes, however, came storming back with a five-run fifth inning. GCU pulled within a run in the seventh but had the tying run tagged out at home plate.
Tuesday's game featured a similar storyline with the Lobos jumping out to an early 4-1 lead. Grand Canyon used some late-game scoring to pull within a run at 6-5 heading to the ninth. A leadoff double by
Krysthian Leal, representing the tying run, was stranded at third base to end the game.
SERIES HISTORYGrand Canyon and Houston will meet for the first time in school history.
PITCHING PREVIEWGCU will send out
Jorge Perez,
Ethan Evanko and
Jake Repavich this weekend. After 5.2 scoreless innings in the season opener, Perez has struggled to return to form as the Lopes' Friday-night starter. Evanko recovered from a rough first outing of the year to limit the opponent to three or less runs in his last three outings, all GCU wins. Repavich's numbers speak for themselves, allowing just three earned runs in 27.0 innings of work on the year. The Lopes are 4-0 in games started by the lefty.
Houston will throw Andrew Lantrip, Seth Romero and John King over the weekend. Lantrip and Romero were both preseason American Conference first-team picks and feature 2.05 and 1.29 ERAs, respectively. Lantrip has struck out 32 batters while walking just one in 26.1 innings of action, while Romero has allowed just eight hits in 14.0 innings. King features a 20-to-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio but has the highest ERA of any starter at 4.58.
SCOUTING HOUSTONThe Cougars were tabbed as the preseason favorites in the American Conference poll. Pitchers Andrew Lantrip and Seth Romero were both unanimous preseason all-conference team selections while second baseman Josh Vidales also made the list.
As a pitching staff, Houston's 2.74 ERA ranks top 35 in the nation with Lantrip leading the charge (2.05).
Offensively, first baseman Joe Davis paces the Cougars with a .400 (26-for-65) batting average with four home runs and 22 RBI. Five players have multiple home runs on the year for Houston.
Last season, Houston posted a 43-20 overall record and claimed the American Conference's regular season title. The Cougars hosted an NCAA regional but did not advance to a super regional after suffering back-to-back one-run losses to Lousiana-Lafayette and Rice.
ON THE HORIZONFollowing a weekend in Houston, the Lopes will pay a visit to UNLV for a single game on Tuesday, March 22 before returning home to Brazell Stadium to begin WAC play against Utah Valley on Thursday, March 24.
