PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon beach volleyball team has now won five matches in a row after going 2-0 on Sunday against New Mexico and San Jose State. The Lopes went into the weekend ranked No. 10 in the country by DIG Magazine and the Lopes played like it, winning eight of the 10 matches they played on Sunday. GCU improved to 6-1 this season.
"We made some switches during the week so some new partnerships take adjusting," head coach
Kristen Rohr said. "This was a great test for us because we are coming off a great weekend and today showed how mentally tough we are."
The Lopes could not have ended the match any better with four straight victories to close against New Mexico in the 4-1 victory. The first match that ended was on Court 4 in favor of New Mexico but GCU quickly turned the tide.
Chloe Jenkins and
Rebecca Conrad got GCU on the scoreboard with a three-set win on Court 5 over Carson Heilborn and Maddie Mayfield. Jenkins and Conrad got off to a slow start dropping the first set 21-16 but the GCU duo rallied to take the final two sets 21-13 and 16-14 to tie the match at 1-1.
Courts 3, 2 and 1 carried the momentum into their matches with three straight victories to pull out the victory.
Mackenzie Phelps and
Shannon Dugan led the charge on Court 1 with a 21-13, 21-19 victory over Ashley Kelsey and Cassie House.
Aleksandra Wachowicz and
Molly Turner was under complete control on Court 2 with a 21-11, 21-10 victory. The final victory of the day came from
Jordyn Sanchez and
Emilee Erichsen on Court 3, defeating New Mexico's Julia Warren and Hannah Johnson 21-19, 22-20 for the 4-1 victory.
Brooke Razo and
Kami Dickerson got GCU's first win against the Spartans Julia Golbeck and Julie Sam with a 21-14, 21-15 victory to put GCU up 1-0. Razo and Dickerson gave the Lopes the lead and they would never relinquish. To close out the day against San Jose State, the duos of Phelps/Dugan and Wachowicz/Turner went 2-0 on the day with victories on Courts 1 and 2.
"The crowds have been great with the support from students and our administration," Rohr said. "Other sports have come out to support us and GCU continues to blow me away by the university supports us."
