NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Grand Canyon softball team fell to No.24 Oregon Sate 9-4 in the second day of the Matador Classic and now sits at 18-8. While GCU matched the Beavers in the hits category with seven, the Lopes weren't able to sustain enough offense to keep up with Oregon State.
The Beavers struck first in the second and put up six runs from six hits to take the lead. GCU answered in the fourth, when
Briielle Breland blasted a ball out of the park and plated
Madelyn Dowdle to put GCU on the board, 6-2.
OSU continued to capitalize on its opportunities and would add to its run total in the fourth and fifth innings.
The Lopes wouldn't go quietly and got their offense clicking in the sixth. Another crucial RBI single by Breland pushed
Sierra Smith across the plate and although
Nikki Gonzalez grounded out to first base she helped score Dowdle who occupied third as a result of a Beaver error. Now down by four, the Lopes were within reach with the score 8-4 OSU.
The Beavers went on to plate their ninth run of the board in the sixth. While GCU would rally in the seventh inning and load the bases as a result of two fielder's choices and another OSU error, it wasn't able to muster enough offense to shave the run differential. As a result, GCU suffered its eighth loss of the season.
Game 2 against San Diego was canceled due to inclement weather. GCU will resume play Saturday morning against San Diego and Toledo. First pitch is set for 8:30 a.m. and 10:50 a.m.
