The Grand Canyon men's basketball team looks to shake off a tough road loss to New Mexico State as they continue their conference road trip down to Edinburg, Texas where they take on the UT Rio Grand Valley Vaqueros on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016. The Lopes hold a 4-1 advantage in five all-time meetings between the two schools.
It will be the second time the Lopes and Vaqueros in the 2015-16 season, with Grand Canyon coming away with an 83-63 win over UTRGV on Jan. 7. In that meeting, the Lopes jumped out to an early lead thanks to a couple of quick shots by Joshua Braun, who scored 20 points, while Grandy Glaze added 17 points and 12 rebounds for one of his seven double-doubles this season.
I knew [the Vaqueros] were going to come in and play extremely hard," head coach Dan Majerle said after the first matchup between the two teams this season. "We had a hard time against them last year. But we jumped on them early, first half was really good. We shot 54 percent, they shot 39 percent. We dominated on the boards. Josh came out shooting really well. We moved it extremely well against the zone."
The Lopes hope to regain their shooting stroke after struggling from the floor during their two-game losing streak, shooting 33.6 percent from the field (39-of-116) and 22.5 percent from behind the arc (9-of-40), both well below their season averages. In Thursday's 70-50 loss to New Mexico State, the Lopes shot only 29.8 percent from the field and 17.6 percent from three-point range.
"It's something that we've been kind of harping on all week long," assistant coach T.J Benson said after the game. "I think its three straight games now where we have not shot the ball well in the second half. When you do have situations like that, you have halves like that, you have to find a way to get it done on the defensive end."
UT Rio Grande Valley has lost four straight games after winning a pair of conference games vs. Chicago State and UMKC three weeks ago. In their last time out, the Vaqueros had five players reach double-digit scoring totels for the third time this season but it wasn't enough as they fell to the Wolverines of Utah Valley 88-77. Dakota Slaughter led UTRGV in scoring with 15 points while Dan Kimasa and J.J. Thompson each added 14 points. Shaquille Hines leads the team in scoring for the season averaging 14.3 points per game.
"Our guys have to stay together," Benson added. "Saturday's a big game. This is a little adversity that we haven't had this year. We've only lost four games and losing two in a row going up to UTRGV. They're a really good team at home. That second leg of the trip has given us issues the last two years. They play us tough. Tomorrow is going to be big. Just getting back on the floor and finding a way to prepare ourselves mentally, physically and get ready for those guys."
Following Saturday's game, the Lopes will return home with a quick turnaround as they host Benedictine (Ariz.) on Tuesday, Feb. 9 at Grand Canyon University Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. MT.
