The Grand Canyon men's basketball team looks to get back to their winning ways as they hit the road to take on the New Mexico State Aggies at the Pan American Center on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016. The winner of the game will be in sole position of first place in the Western Athletic Conference standings.
The Lopes are 1-5 all-time against the Aggies, but that first win came four weeks ago as Grand Canyon broke New Mexico State's 14-game conference winning streak as they pulled out a 79-75 win at Grand Canyon University Arena. Joshua Braun recorded a double-double as he put up 23 points and 11 rebounds, including going 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the final 12 seconds to seal the victory. The Lopes committed a season-low four turnovers, the lowest number for a WAC team this season.
Their last time out on the floor, the Lopes saw their NCAA-leading 12-game winning streak snapped as they fell 59-57 at the hands of Seattle U last Saturday night. The Lopes shot only 37 percent for the game, including an ice-cold 25 percent in the second half. The Lopes lost the rebounding battle 36-32, the sixth time they have lost the rebounding battle this season and were outscored in the paint by the Redhawks 42-28.
"That happens," head coach Dan Majerle said of the cold-shooting night. "It's too bad it happened to everybody on the same night. Josh has been a work horse all year long and has shot the ball extremely well all year long. Ryan (Majerle) has been dead eye if he's ever open and he didn't make a shot tonight. DeWayne (Russell)'s had a little bit of struggles but he usually comes through in the mix. The only guy that really got it done was Grandy (Glaze) down there in the middle. They tried to start taking that away so it was just a tough situation. We weren't making any shots and they were playing zone."
New Mexico State has won five straight games since falling to the Lopes on Jan. 9. They have won 31 straight WAC games at the Pan American Center and are 61-6 (.910) in their last 67 games played at home. Their last time out, the Aggies never trailed as they cruised to 92-68 win over UT Rio Grande Valley thanks to Pascal Siakam's NCAA-leading 19th double-double of the season as he socred 24 points and added 16 rebounds, three blocks and three steals.
"Big, talented, veteran," Majerle said when asked what made the Aggies so tough. "(Ian) Baker and Pascal are veterans. Pascal's only a sophomore, but he's been through it, he's played in big games. Their arena is a lot like ours, it's a very hard place to play. They're just talented, they've always been talented, they're the team in the league that everybody in the league wants to beat and that's the standard we're trying to reach and beyond. So, they've been good for a long time, they know how to play and they play hard and they're well coached and they have good players."
Following Thursday's game with New Mexico State, the Lopes will continue their conference road trip at UT Rio Grande Valley on Saturday.
