The Grand Canyon men's basketball team will honor its seniors for Homecoming as they host Chicago State in the last regular season home game on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016 at Grand Canyon University Arena.
The Lopes' 23 wins are tied for the second-most in the country and through Thursday's games, they currently sit with the sixth best winning percentage in NCAA Division I play at .852. GCU is coming off a 78-66 win over UMKC on Thursday night, their fourth-straight win and now their 16th win in their last 18 games.
"I thought it was a really good win," head coach
Dan Majerle said after the win. "We came out and we played for 40 minutes. We did a tremendous job, everybody that played did really well."
Joshua Braun bounced back from a tough game against Seattle U by scoring a game-high 26 points including hitting 4-of-5 from 3-point range. The conference leader in free throw percentage was also a perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw line while adding a career-best 3 blocked shots.
"Josh has had a tremendous season," Majerle said. "You're going to have bad games every once in a while, especially when you're the focal point of all the defenses. The best thing when you talk about Josh is he's 12-for-12 from the line. He's such a good foul shooter that you just get him down there and he's a beast down there. He doesn't need a lot of shots to get his points. He's been like that all along but he's going to have bad games, but he's one of those guys you can count on."
Grandy Glaze scored 10 points and tied his career-high with 15 rebounds to record his 11th double-double of the season.
Ryan Majerle came off the bench to once again score in double figures, scoring 10 points and hitting two 3-pointers.
Keonta Vernon added 12 points on 5-for-5 shooting from the field in 17 minutes of action.
Chicago State enters Saturday's game having lost their last 15 consecutive games and 22 of their last 23 contests. Despite the slide, the Cougars have been playing much better as of late. On Thursday night, they fell 74-72 at Utah Valley despite having three players score in double-figures. Fred Sims, Jr. led the Cougars with 18 points while Clemmye Owens V and Anthony Eaves added 17 and 14 points, respectively.
The Lopes will play their last three games of the regular season as they head to California next week for a matchup with CSU Bakersfield on Saturday, Feb. 27 before heading to Moraga, Calif. for a tough test with Saint Mary's.
