KANSAS CITY – The Grand Canyon women's basketball team moved above .500 within the Western Athletic Conference with a huge win on the road in Kansas City. The Lopes were efficient on offense shooting 51.8 percent from the field as the Lopes made it two wins in a row defeating Missouri-Kansas City 68-59. GCU improves to 14-13 this season and 6-5 in the WAC.
GCU began the fourth period on an 11-0 run to grow its lead to 12 points. The Lopes held UMKC scoreless for the first 5:15 of the final period.
"We had good energy and togetherness from the tip," head coach
Trent May said. "I was pleased with the effort and the way we competed tonight. This is a great way to start our road trip and I am very proud of the girls and our staff."
The Lopes presented a consistent offensive scoring attack throughout the entire game, scoring 18 points in each of the first, second and fourth quarters.
Cheyenne Hedrington recorded her second straight double-double with 10 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. The stats were similar across the board in terms of rebounding and assists but GCU was able to capitalize in the paint. GCU was also able to limit UMKC to shooting 37.5 percent from the field.
A low-scoring first quarter quickly turned in GCU's favor after a pair of 3-point shots from
Devyn Edwards and
Jessica Gajewski propelled the Lopes to an early 14-7 advantage.
Courtney Hayes finished off the first period with a quick two with time running out to put GCU in front 18-9 after one quarter.
Grand Canyon maintained its lead through the first half of the second quarter, but the Roos quickly narrowed the gap to just two points by the 3:49 mark. GCU went into the locker room with a 36-32 edge at the break. Edwards posted a game-high 12 points in the first half alone, just four points shy of tying her season-high for points in an entire game.
It was a tight ballgame through the third quarter as UMKC outscored GCU 17-14 in the third quarter to close the gap heading into the final quarter. UMKC went into the fourth quarter with momentum as it trailed GCU by just one point but the Lopes quickly turned the momentum in their favor. GCU was able to outscore the Roos by eight points in the final 10 minutes to split the series this season.
The Lopes ended the game with five players scoring in double figures led by
Courtney Hayes with 16 points.
GCU will conclude its final WAC road trip of the season on Saturday, Feb. 20, when it faces Chicago State. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. MT.
