With a new two-game winning streak going, the Grand Canyon men's basketball team looks to make it three in a row as they head up to Seattle, Wash. to try and avenge a conference loss two weeks ago as they take on the Seattle U Redhawks at Key Arena on Friday, Feb. 12, 2016. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. MT.
The Lopes are currently tied with CSU Bakersfield for second place in the Western Athletic Conference standings with a 7-2 conference record, while the Redhawks are one game back, sitting at 6-3 through nine conference games. The Lopes and Redhawks are the top two three-point shooting teams in the WAC, hitting at .378 and .377 marks respectively.
It will be the seventh matchup between the two teams as Grand Canyon holds a 5-1 advantage in the series overall. In their last meeting though, the Redhawks stunned the Lopes at GCU Arena with a 59-57 win that snapped the Lopes' NCAA-best 12-game winning streak. The Lopes were led by
Joshua Braun who had 17 points on the evening while
Grandy Glaze recorded a double-double with 16 points and pulling down 12 boards. The Lopes trailed by 6 with just over five minutes to play before
Joshua Braun hit a three-pointer to tie the game with 1:38 remaining. After a defense stop by each side, Seattle U's Brandon Westendorf missed a jumpshot but Manny Chibuogwu grabbed the offensive rebound and put it back to give the Redhawks a two point lead with three seconds to go.
DeWayne Russell had one last shot at the buzzer, but could not get his three-pointer to fall.
The Lopes last were on the floor on Tuesday as they took on non-conference opponent Benedictine at Mesa. For the second consecutive game, Grand Canyon relied on the scoring of Braun, Glaze and
Keonta Vernon as those three scored 70 of the Lopes' 95 points in the game. Braun led with 26 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field and a perfect 9-for-9 mark from the charity stripe. Glaze hit 10-of-15 shots for 25 points and a career-best 15 rebounds. Vernon had his second-straight double-figure scoring game with 19 points, following up his 15 point effort against UTRGV the previous Saturday.
"We know exactly what they do," head coach
Dan Majerle said of the rematch with Seattle U. "They're big, they play zone. They kicked our butts here, physically. We're just going to have to get ready and see if we've got a little payback for them. If we want to stay in the WAC race, we can't lose either at home or on the road. So this will be a good test for us."
The Redhawks enter Friday's game on a five-game winning streak. They most recently took down UMKC 65-55 in their homecoming game last Saturday at Key Arena. William Powell had his first double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 boards. For the season, Westendorf leads Seattle U in scoring, averagin 11.8 points per game.
Following Tuesday's game, the Lopes will retturn home for their last conference homestand as they welcome UMKC and Chicago State to town on Thursday, Feb. 18 and 20 at GCU Arena.
